I know I should've done this post weeks ago but it doesn't matter. I'm doin' it anyway. Honestly, it's not my first time to get upclose and personal with WWE Superstar Batista. I've met him way back in 2006. It was also his first of his 3 visits here in the Philippines. I was actually lucky enough to get his autograph on his 1st visit here. I had my issue of FLEX magazine signed by him. He was the cover boy in that mag which I got at a very cheap price. It was a good swag indeed. I even got a quick photo op with during his autograph signing at the time. The only reason I got an opportunity to meet him 3 years ago is that the event was sponsored by a pizza company and I had to buy a box of pizza worth 800 php. It was well worth it though. I ate the pizza when I got home.

March 2, 2009 was the day he returned to his Filipino roots. I marked that on my calendar as soon as I got confirmation from Jack TV via email. That was also the same day I'd get to meet Dave Batista for the 2nd time. Many thanks to the Jack TV peeps for the opportunity of meeting the one and only Batista. I joined their contest and I was one of the lucky few to meet him on that day.

It was technically a meet and greet event at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Pasig but only 10 out of the 50 chosen promo winners were the fortunate ones to really MEET Batista. The rest of the winners (including yours truly) got a group photo-op with the WWE Superstar. We weren't allowed to get his autograph. The 10 others were the ones who were able to have a solo pic with him and have whatever stuff they have signed by him. The group shot was still good though.

I know it sucks but it's all good. I already got his autograph and picture with him 3 years ago and that is already something. Besides, getting a Jack TV goodie back (comes with a WWE Batista shirt and 2 posters) is just one of the perks of being a promo winner and a bonafide WWE fan. It would've been better of course if he pre-signed one of the 2 posters in our goodie bag but what heck, it doesn't matter. The dope Batista shirt was an awesome swag anyway. I even met one the most respected sports broadcasters in the Philippines, Mr. Chino Trinidad. It was the second time I've met him. The last time I spoke/met him was about 10 years ago or something. Yeah it was that long. Chatted with him a bit then had my picture taken with him before he left the hotel's lobby.

Jack TV even interviewed me after the event. I know I'm not that comfortable being filmed and interviewed on camera by anyone but since the cable network approached me nicely, I was cool with it. Despite being camera shy and all. I had to wear my sunglasses before the interview. I didn't to look wasted on camera. Thank goodness. During the interview, I said some things that, lets' just say, it didn't turn out the I way wanted. No, I didn't say any profane words, it's just some of them were pretty much out of place all due to lack of sleep and didn't lunch before going there. Had to email Jack TV to edit my interview as soon as I got home for good measure.

The interview was for the "Animal in Manila 2" 30 minute special. It was aired last night, March 29 at 7 pm. I only told a few people about it as I didn't want to be embarrassed. It was actually funny seeing myself on TV. I really didn't want to see myself on TV but it really got me curious that's why I checked it out. My interview was edited real good all thanks to Jack TV. It turned out really good and I didn't expect it to be more than that, in a good way that is. I was just smiling the whole time. It was a weird experience seeing myself on TV but all in all, it's simply cool. Haha!! I hope I get to have a copy of that Batista special.

The next day, I went to his mall appearance late in the afternoon. It was also the last day of his visit here in the country. He was interviewed by Jack TV host Dylan, answered a few questions, gave away some free posters to the crowd then he left the building; show's over. The fans were happy.

Thanks again to Jack TV for the rare opportunity to meet WWE Superstar Batista and that goodie bag which was really dope. I'm already hanging one of the posters in my room. Thanks for bringing him back here in the Philippines. He's one classy guy and is not afraid to tell the world that he's proud to be Filipino. Hope the big fella comes back here. He's hoping to join the Smackdown Superstars coming here on July 10. Don't worry Batista, every Filipino here is praying you come back and perform for us here again. Trust me, we're all keeping our fingers crossed.

It was a great experience indeed. Can't wait for July 10. Wrestlemania 25 is coming up next week. I'ma be watching that one for sure. I forgot to tell y'all that I'm a hardcore WWE fan. Well, now you know. I'm just saying.

New F1 team + Rare major upset + Controversies = Best F1 race ever!

The Australian F1 Grand Prix '09 was perhaps the best one I've ever watched. That race really made my day as I don't get to watch some good sports action on a hot yet lazy Sunday afternoon. I've waited months for the new season of Formula One and after all the hype, it surely didn't disappoint. I was very happy of the results and I'm thankful I watched the whole race.

Now, who would've thought a new F1 team (with not so new drivers) could win their first race on their season debut? The Brawn-Mercedes F1 team did just that. Having qualified for the 1st and 2nd positions at the starting grid, both Jenson Button and Rubens Barichello finished the race with same way they started it. Nobody saw this coming but as I watched everything happen, I knew something special was gonna happen in Melbourne.

New Cars.

Let me go back to the new look of the cars, for a second. It was my first time to see the 2009 cars for all teams. A lot of changes were made like the specs and tires but the most notable were the aerodynamics. The new cars looked somewhat sexier now. It could be a cost cutting measure of sorts by the FIA but I'm sure it's gonna take a lot of getting used to watching those new cars. The rear spoilers are narrower than before, the nose looked a bit thinker and the front spoilers are wider and lowered a bit more. Bottomline is, they all look faster now. I'm still not feeling the narrow rear spoilers.

Too Aggressive.

Red Bull F1 team's Sebastien Vettel would've won the race at 2nd place had he not been too 'competitive' with Williams F1 team's Robert Kubica in the last 3 laps of the race (56th lap). His aggressiveness made him pay, literally. Although, he apologized to the Swedish driver, that thing he did took a toll on his chances of earning his first championship points of the season.

Got 'Button'?

It was like a cinderella story for one Jenson Button. Since Japanese car maker Honda pulled out of the F1, it was a new beginning for Button. Change proved to be a fruitful one as the British driver and Brazilian teammate Rubens Barichello pulled a huge upset in the F1 stage. The Brawn-Mercedes team made history as the only rookie team to complete a 1-2 finish in their season debut. Button was the leader all throughout the race and the chequered flag got his name on it. Clearly, a well deserved win for him. As they say, "it's one for the books." Toyota's Jarno Trulli placed 3rd and Mclaren's Lewis Hamilton finished at 4th.

Demoted.

Despite the 3rd place finish, Trulli was disqualified and moved Hamilton from 4th to 3rd place. A very controversial decision on the part of the FIA. It all when the safety car was deployed after Vettel-Kubica collision at the 56th lap:

Race stewards later ruled that Trulli, driving a Toyota, had overtaken Lewis while the safety car was on the course and handed him a 25-second penalty, which saw him relegated from third and out of the points.

"Lewis had to go past him because he went onto the grass, he was not on the circuit," McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said.

"Trulli then took back the place under the safety car, which ordinarily you wouldn't do."

Despite celebrating with Button and Barichello at the winners podium (and press conference), everything was for naught. His trophy and championship points were all taken away from him (except for that champagne he had consumed after the celebration). That sucks for Trulli, I'm sure.

Something to look forward to.

At one point, I thought I was gonna see yet another win from either Lewis Hamilton or Kimi Raikkonen but this particular race made the F1 more exciting to watch. Unpredictability is one thing that keeps me glued on a certain sport. The 2009 F1 season renewed my interest with motorsports. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these great finishes in the upcoming GP's. I'm gonna try to watch each race live and be up to date with the news. Hopefully, I get to write some stuff for each race including the qualifiers. It's gonna be a challenge for me.

D-Wade to Chi-town in 2010?

Chicago fans would love to see Dwyane Wade in a Bulls uni. 2010 is the year, some of the NBA's cream of the crop will become free agents. The possibility of Wade jumping ship to the Bulls could happen. Unless, Heat President Pat Riley has something to say about it.

If Wade does part ways with the Heat next year, he can now sign with any team he chooses. The Bulls now have a chance to make that dream a reality. It's gonna be a wait and see kind of thing for D-Wade at the moment. He's playing great basketball and getting back to the playoffs is just one of the things he's focused on.

For now, the Bulls will have to wait and hope 2010 would be the year Dwyane Wade comes home to Chicago.

Drop it. Seriously.

Clash of the Titans: LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are the top candidates

I’m sure a lot of NBA heads out there are still doing the LeBron-Kobe (with the Michael Jordan references) debate now that the MVP race is heating up even more. I’m gonna try to be objective about it since this topic is obviously a hot one. So here we go.

First, a brief history of the 2 top players in the NBA (I apologize if I missed out some info on them. Please let me know if ever).

2003 was the year a young LeBron James entered the NBA arena as if a psychic had actually predicted of his coming. The hype was there of course. Comparisons to Money and Magic Johnson always followed him even before making his first step in the L. After he was drafted at number 1, everything certainly fell into place thus creating a new era, a new beginning in Cleveland. Wore number 23 like his hero MJ, carried his team on his shoulders, became playoff contenders and the rest was all history.

Kobe Bryant on the other hand, had a different experience when he first entered the L. He was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets back in ‘96 but later on the LA got his draft rights and soon he was already wearing the purple and gold uni. Won the dunk contest in the same year. Had the same comparisons to MJ as well. A few years later, he along with Shaq brought 3 NBA championships to LA. Shaq was then traded to Miami on 2004. The spotlight is now on Kobe. Dropped the number 8 and wore 24. Became MVP last season. Brought his team back to the Finals but lost to the Boston Celtics in the end.

One of the things perhaps that is similar with these cats is that they were both compared to one Michael Jordan. The other is certainly the obvious, both are playing in the NBA. There’s no doubt both have the talent, skills and athletic gifts but both have some differences. I don’t have to mention Bron’s height and athletic advantage or Kobe’s championship experience and scoring prowess. Everybody knows all of that stuff. The MVP race this year is indeed gonna be a tough call. But like all discussions in NBA forums, blogs, etc., it all comes down to King James and Mamba.

If y’all are gonna ask me who should be MVP between LeBron and Kobe? I say give the MVP award to King James. A lot of Kobe fans (especially here in the Philippines) will have a lot to say on this. Kobe Bryant's got a lot of Filipino fans here. The reason: he plays like Michael Jordan.

Speaking of MJ, so much talk on Bron and Kobe having similar traits with the G.O.A.T. How both of them have the same, if not all of Money’s attributes. I’ve been trying stay silent or better yet, keep away from this very sensitive topic/debate. I guess it’s time to drop my two cents on this one.

The comparisons should stop already.

They (Bron and Kobe) may possess some of MJ’s moves and all but they also have their own ways/abilities to take their own game to the next level. Money got the same treatment (being compared to Dr. J) when he was a rook. Sure, he idolized the doc but he did something more. Added some offensive in his arsenal and won more MVP hardware and NBA championships than Julius Earving did. Jordan literally took his game to the next level.

If I’m gonna cite examples on Kobe why he shouldn’t be compared to MJ, here’s one of them: Kobe wasn’t a starter in his rookie season as opposed to Money who was already given the starting spot and was the go-to guy for the Bulls when he was a rook. That’s one thing that can be compared to Lebron. Though I’m no Kobe Bryant fan, I followed his career since the day he was drafted in 1996. The other, Mamba won his 3 ‘chips with a dominant center. Jordan however, was the dominant player that earned him 6 titles and MVP honors with the Chicago Bulls. Plus, Kobe never won the ROY.

As for Lebron, the obvious is his size/height. Bron is 6′9″ although he’s listed at 6′8″. The other one, something both he and Kobe have in common, not college ball and jumped straight to the pros. Jordan balled in college and won NCAA championship(s) before being drafted in the NBA. Going back to the height differences, Kobe is actually 6′7″ but is listed at 6′6″.

I could go on and on with the list of reasons why none of these 2 or any player for that matter, should even be compared to Michael Jordan. All I can say is, there’s no comparison at all.

Comparing LeBron James and Kobe Bryant alone is like comparing apples to oranges, what more if any of them are compared to Money. They have their own attributes. They have their own road to success. Hence, each player is unique. It’s not fair for anyone to be compared to another. It’s not fair to MJ, Mamba, Bron or anyone for that matter. Kobe can only be Kobe. LeBron can only be LeBron. Everybody wants to be like Mike but the truth is, nobody can be like Mike. Michael Jordan can only be Michael Jordan. His moves can be copied but not all of them. There are certain moves that only MJ can do.

The NBA shouldn’t look for the next Michael Jordan. Because there won’t be another. MJ shouldn’t be the only yardstick of greatness in the NBA. That level of greatness can be reached depending on one’s ability or passion for the game. The L should instead look for someone who’s not trying to be someone he’s not. A player who can be himself. In other words, one should just be true and play the game the way he wants to play it.

Bottomline is, there’s only one Michael Jordan. Period.

David Beckham hearts Milan.

Being in Italy is perhaps the one thing he's always wanted. He loves the country (and the city) so much, he'd do anything to extend his stay in Milan. It's no secret that he his personal preferences to stay with the Italian club. In fact, he wants the whole world to know what he's really cooking up. But seriously, nobody can deny his desire to play for his beloved England.

"There's a few reasons for staying with Milan. One is I'm playing with one of the biggest clubs in the world and with some of the best players in the world. I'm passionate about that," Beckham told the BBC.

"Obviously the one everyone talks about is it gives me a chance to play in the 2010 World Cup. I personally have to do everything I can to be involved in that."

"Everyone knows how passionate I am about playing for my country and if this gives me a better chance of being involved in that squad that's great."

The football world is wondering: just how bad does good ol' Becks wants to remain in an AC Milan uniform? Simple: sacrifice some of his hard-earned cash for him to stay and he'll be a happy Englishman. That sure made a lot of buzz all over. AC Milan execs clearly took notice of his interest with the club.

“A lot of players show their affection just with words. David Beckham is one of the very few who has shown it with deeds,” AC Milan chairman Adriano Galliani said Sunday on Italian state television.

“He has made an incredible economic commitment, paying a lot of money from his own pocket,” Galliani added.

Very touching indeed. Getting some love from the club's chairman as well. AC Milan is willing to spend a lot of money just to keep Becks in the team. On the other hand, it won't be easy for them to extend his services. The LA Galaxy are expecting his return to California in July. That means, David Beckham will have to don his Galaxy jersey in MLS but will miss a few games in the league's upcoming season after his loan with Milan expires.

The MLS soccer team are currently trying to close out the deal with the Italian club. Talks between the two teams are still far from over. Simply put, Beckham won't be jumping ship to AC Milan until his contract with the LA Galaxy is done. Sorry Becks, it's time for you to be a man and finish what you started in LA LA Land. Looks like Hollywood will have to do for now. It can't be that bad perhaps. Milan ain't going anywhere, you know. At least, you're still popular in America.

Watched a UAAP V-ball game for the first time.

I'm a follower of the UAAP basketball games (and a fan of the De La Salle Green Archers) however, I don't follow the sport of volleyball. My reasons? One of them, is the fact that volleyball games are hardly aired here locally (I think). Although I've played the sport in high school, I guess I never had the knack for it because I'm too short to play the game. It's typically a girl's sport other than soccer. And surprisingly, the best players (mostly females) are just about as tall as I am (I may be wrong on that one).

Speaking of volleyball, I was surfing the boob tube on a boring sunday afternoon. After a few clicks on the TV (my remote is busted), the UAAP Women's Volleyball Championship between FEU (Far Eastern University) Lady Tamaraws and DLSU (De La Salle University) Lady Archers was on. It was aired on Studio 23. Game 3 was in progress and it's already the 2nd set. The series was tied at one-a-piece. Winner take all match for both teams. La Salle was one set ahead while defending champions FEU were trying to equalize the game. I got curious of the game since I'm a fan of La Salle (even though I never studied there). Glad I didn't change the channel. Turned out to be a good idea after all.

Height is Might.

Looking at both teams rosters, FEU's lineup are huge as opposed to the DLSU's. Their tallest player I believe is Rachel Ann Daquis (who's one hot babe in my book) must be 6'2"- 6'3" in height and their shortest could be around 5'9"- 5'10". The rest look to be almost 6-footers. The Lady Spikers, from my observation, have the shortest lineup. Most of the players look like they're 5'6"- 5'8" in height. It's a complete mismatch. Seemed like a David versus Goliath kind of thing but La Salle's heart was bigger and that made the difference.

It's all or nothing.

The Lady Tamaraws were able to take 2nd set, winning the 3rd set was crucial for both teams. It went back and forth the entire set but La Salle took set number 3. I wasn't taking down notes, most especially the scores, as I'm not really keen on the scoring system but I'm sure which team won for each set. I apologize for not being detailed on this. Moving on, the pressure was now on the FEU. The Lady Tams needed the 4th and final set to force a 5th set. The Lady Archers were already smelling blood and ready to seal the deal. FEU needed another equalizer to stay in contention. It was the turning point of the game. Quite frankly, it kept me glued to the TV screen even more.

The heart of the defending champs were put to the test. It was all about which team wanted the title more. The game of their lives perhaps. The UAAP championship was on the line.

One for the road.

All eyes on the vets. It was time for the Lady Tams' ace player, Rachel Ann Daquis to step up and put her team on her shoulders once more. She carried her team for 5 years and it would be fitting for her to leave the game as champion. DLSU's Manilla Santos however, have the same thing in mind. The Lady Archers' captain helped her team bounce back from a disappointing title run, not making the final four last season. Both Santos and Daquis were playing their final game and are graduating this March.

Fight 'til the end.

The 4th and final set was intense. FEU kept the game very close. They tied up the score twice, I believe. The crowd was really into it obviously. I noticed throughout the game that it was hardly as fast-paced and unpredictable as I expected it to be. Whatever it is, it seemed like they were very hesitant of their attacks since the 2nd set. That's just my observation. Maybe it wasn't too fast for me perhaps. Somehow this particular set had a few hard-hitting plays especially from FEU's Daquis who had a lot of powerful spikes.

Despite the height difference, La Salle's defense controlled the game literally keeping FEU at the backseat. They've made a lot of good blocks off of FEU's strong attacks but the Lady Tams didn't give up. The score was getting close until both teams reached the 20-point mark (if I recall correctly). The Lady Archers called for timeout to regroup as they didn't want to let the Lady Tams 1-up them. Everybody was on the edge of their seats and so was I. It was bananas. Kinda like watching a basketball game, if you ask me.

With everything hanging in the balance, the defending champs were looking to take advantage of the situation and take the lead. After the La Salle timeout, the crowd was getting even louder. A lot of intensity in the Lady Tams' eyes. The REAL game was about to begin. FEU's serve, ball going straight to DLSU's side. Took a while to score. I'm finally seeing more attacks and some spike/attack fakes, whatever they call it. The pace was getting faster until La Salle takes the lead.

La Salle's serve, same back and forth plays, FEU scores. Tied up at 21 all. Another FEU serve, similar plays but an unforced error caused them the chance of taking the lead once more. Lady Archers' score is now 22. Lady Tams make a substitution. Rachel Daquis takes a seat. There was a lot of disappointment in her face yet was still have a lot of faith in her team. From the bench, she was looking on. Keeping her fingers crossed, literally, hoping for a miracle to happen although she knew it was gonna be over soon. The inevitable was already sinking in.

A couple of DLSU serves later, the score was already 24-21. The championship was within reach for the Lady Archers. DLSU serves, more quick plays, FEU attacks, La Salle defense on the block. FEU thought the ball went in off the attack but it didn't. The umpire awards the score to La Salle, it's all over! Lady Archers win season 71 of the UAAP and are back on top of the mountain. DLSU's Manilla Santos takes the MVP hardware. The team celebrates.

Congratulations to the DLSU Lady Archers for winning the championship. Watching championship matches of any team sport Live on TV is always fun and exciting. It was my first (and last) time to see the oh-so-pretty Rachel Ann Daquis of FEU in action. I'm gonna miss her. I wanna congratulate the FEU Lady Tamaraws as well. It was a hard fought battle. They sure gave La Salle a run for their money. It was a good run for them. A valiant effort at that. Hats off to both teams for putting up a great match. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rachel Daquis or Manilla Santos do some color commentary on UAAP volleyball games in the future. Heck, I'm looking forward to that.

After watching the game, I instantly became a fan of volleyball. Next season, UAAP Women's Volleyball will be on my radar. Gotta give some love to the women of sports once in a while. I'm hoping to watch all the games and maybe then, I'll be doing detailed notes on them. Again, I apologize for lacking a few details (i.e. scores and other stats) as I watched the game by accident and I decided to write this article at the last minute. Thus, relying mostly on all the stuff by memory. I'll do my best next time. If y'all have any corrections regarding my game information and the like, feel free to inform me.

If I'm gonna do some posts about volleyball (one of these days perhaps), an education on the sport is a must for me. I need to learn the terms and all the important stuff. Well, another sport to add on my watch list, of sorts. I'm hoping I could write about sports that I like on my blog as much as I can. I'm not worried about doing stuff about sports. Keeping up with the news for each sport is the difficult part.

All I can say is, my love for sports is the only thing that keeps the fire burning. I'll just leave it at that, for now. Might as well take things one step at a time.

Updates! Updates! Updates!

A lot of stuff going on around Sports. Manny Pacquiao dropping the WBC Lightweight title and got his eyes on the Super Lightweight division. The Pacquiao-Hatton fight is gonna be worth watching this coming May 2 (May 3 here in Manila). He's already started training for the fight. To qoute WWE Commentor Jim Ross: "it's gonna be a slobber-knocker" of a fight, I tell you.

Quick thoughts: The move is good but going for another title before hanging up his gloves is just not a good idea in my book. It's enough that he's already made history having won 4-titles in different weight classes is already a tremendous achievement. I'm not saying that he doesn't have a chance at winning a new title but suffice to say, he's already proven himself and to the world what a great champion he truly is and I'm proud of it. I just hope his last fight would be against Floyd Mayweather Jr. That I'm sure would be one slugfest worth watching.

The new season of the Formula 1 is coming up and I can't wait for that one. Maclaren's Lewis Hamilton will defend his crown against Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. A lot of changes for the new cars this year. I expect Renault's Fernando Alonso to give Mr. Hamilton a run for his money.

Quick thoughts: I still say Felipe Massa should've been champion not Hamilton. I will never be a Ferrari fan but as a Maclaren fan, there's a lot of controversy in his win last year. I hope it's not Deja Vu all over again this year.

Denver Nuggets' forward Carmelo Anthony already served his one game suspension for crossing the line with coach George Karl a couple of days ago. D-Wade spoiled Shaqawockee's return to Miami and it was an absolute high scoring game. A lot of MVP chants all throughout the game. The Cleveland Cavaliers beefed up their roster with the return of Joe Smith in a Cavs uni. Starbury signing with the Boston Celtics was no surprise.

Quick thoughts: I'm a bit late on some of the news. My apologies for that. Melo better start acting like a Superstar stop being a pouting little brat for once and do what coach Karl says. It seems to me he's a little jealous because C-Bills is getting all the love from George Karl. Hate to say this but you dropped the ball Melo and you're losing it, son. Get a hold of yourself and be responsible.

D-Wade was a beast in that game. Dropping a lot of dimes to his teammates and that sick block from behind on Grant Hill was just amazing! Bananas I tell you! Shaq's been getting a lot of attention lately after the All-Star break. I'm not sure if he's trying to shake up the L but he better hope that works. Phoenix is about a couple of games behind in the race for the 8th spot in the West.

Joe Smith could be the back-up bigman they needed. With the injured Ben Wallace out, he could fill in the void at the 4 and this could mean that the Cavs are more dangerous in the East and they just got deeper. And lastly, Marbury in Boston could make or break the defending champs' chances of repeating this year. I'm not sure how he's gonna get some PT with Rondo and Eddie House in the rotation. I'm not banking on him being a starter. Rajon Rondo is the Celtics' top point guard. Enjoy the Celtics experience Steph. Better start working on your defense while you're at it. Oh, forgot to mention Mikki Moore signed with the Celtics recently. They got a good backup for the injured Kevin Garnett.

That's a wrap for now. I'll be posting perhaps tomorrow on WWE Superstar Batist's recent visit here in Manila. I have yet to post something about the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association). I have to give some love on some of the PBA's best players once in a while. I'm excited for that. I have something cooking up for the EC blogsite.
