A lot of stuff happened in the first few games of the UAAP Season 74. College basketball have always been the most popular among hoops fans and the UAAP is no exception. New players, new coaches mean more drama and excitement. While many are dying to see the much anticipated Ateneo-La Salle match-up on July 16, let's take a look back at the winners (and losers) from the opening game to other hoops action of the Women's and Juniors division.

July 10, 2011: DLSU lost to FEU 74-65 , Ateneo KO Adamson 55-51

A rematch of the Final Four last season, everyone expected the Green Archers to win in the inaugural game but the Tamaraws have other plans in mind. The Archers had full control of the game right from the start, then the tables turned in the 2nd quarter. Despite shooting at a measley 40.4 % from the field, the Tams took advantage of the Archers' sloppy plays and started making their scoring run. The Gang Green's rebounding was the only thing that kept them afloat the entire game.

LA Revilla racked up 18 points, 5 boards and 5 dimes for his return to the Green Archers roster in a losing effort. FEU's rising star RR Garcia carried his team with 21 points chalking up a W for Season 74.

New rivals Ateneo Blue Eagles and Adamson Soaring Falcons faced once more in the main event at the Big Dome. Keifer Ravena had a rather quiet debut for Ateneo but the other rookie Greg Slaughter was louder than bomb on his first game in the UAAP. The big man had 23 points, 8 rebounds and dropped 2 dimes for the Blue Eagles albeit the low scoring game for both teams.

Adamson gave their all and still managed to keep up with the defending champs. Alex Nuyles had 11 points, 3 boards and an assist for the Soaring Falcons.

Ateneo joins Far Eastern University in the winners circle side by side atop the standings.

The young guns take the floor

The Blue Eagles gym in Ateneo is the new home for the UAAP Juniors hoops action. Adamson defeated UP 83-64. The Baby Falcons' El-Jay Canuel, Brian Quipse and William Polican scored 13 points each. Kim Cinco was the scoring leader for UP with 18 points, 12 rebounds, 4 dimes and 2 steals.

In the second game, the National University Baby Bulldogs dropped the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs in OT 63-59. Ralph Tansingco of NU racked 20 points, 4 boards and blocked 2 shots. UST's Nicko Bahia had 23 points, 6 rebounds, a couple of steals and one assist.

FEU dominated UE in game 3, 98-68. Jerie Pingoy chalked up 23 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dropped 8 dimes and had 7 steals for the Baby Tams while UE's Ralph Lapada scored 14 points, 5 boards, 5 assists and 2 steals.

The main game pitted rivals De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers and the Ateneo Blue Eaglets. This time however, the Junior Archers were the victors in OT against the Eaglets on their Blue home turf 78-75. Gabriel Reyes of DLSZ scored 21 points, had 4 boards, stolen the ball once and dropped a dime.

The Blue Eaglets Kristoffer Porter put his team on his shoulders in a losing effort. In spite of the loss, he had a double-double performance with 16 points, 11 boards, had 1 assist and a blocked shot.

It's the Ladies turn

Who says girls can't ball? Well, the UAAP lady ballers may have something to say about that. Game one of the Women's Division, the Ateneo Lady Eagles got an easy W over the NU Lady Bulldogs 51-39. Samantha Ong scored 11 points, grabbed 6 boards and had one assist for the Ladies in Blue. NU's Eden Alla had 13 points, 4 rebounds and dropped just one dime.

The Lady Fighting Maroons notched their first win over the Lady Red Warriors 64-52. Beatrice Daez and Kryzza Casino had 12 points apiece for UP. Dianne Ventura of UE racked up 23 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

It was a close one for both the UST Tigresses and AdU Lady Falcons in the 3rd game. In the end it was UST that had the upper hand over Adamson 66-60. Juvelyn Andaya was the top scorer with 15 points. Her teammate MaryJoy Galicia had the same number in rebounds and had 14 points to go with it.

Adamson's Angelica Ortega had 14 points, 7 rebounds, dropped 7 dimes and a steal. Snow Penaranda was the Queen of the Boards for the Lady Falcons. She grabbed 19 rebounds, scored 13 points, blocked one shot and had a steal.

The DLSU Lady Archers destroyed the FEU Lady Tamaraws 61-59 in the main game. Trisha Piatos chalked 14 points, 4 boards and dropped 4 dimes for La Salle. The Lady Tam's Allana Lim had double-double with 17 points and 13 boards. She also blocked a couple of shots and dropped one dime for FEU.
