The end of the elimination round of UAAP hoops is getting closer. While the Blue Eagles remain on top, other teams are still trying to secure a spot in the Final Four. Here's a roundup of what happened last week:
Thursday, September 1
Game 1: AdU Falcons clobber UE Warriors 76-57
The Red Warriors have this knack for giving top teams in the UAAP a hard time. The Falcons got a taste of his for a while but didn't last long. UE managed to keep the game close until the 2nd quarter albeit their poor shooting from the field.
Adamson then took advantage of the Warriors' struggles shooting the ball and went all the way for the W.
Eric Camson of Adamson had 20 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal.
UE's veteran Paul Zamar finished with 17 points and dropped 2 dimes.
Game 2: Ateneo extend win streak, beat UP 73-58
It was pretty much another day in the office for the reigning UAAP champs. It was the same old story for the hapless UP Maroons. Simply put, it was a typical win for Ateneo.
The Blue Eagles big man Greg Slaughter was in beast mode and dropped 18 points, 18 boards, 1 assist and 1 block on the Warriors.
Mike Silungan, in a losing effort, lead the Maroons with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
Saturday, September 3
Game 1: Ateneo Blue Eagles dump NU Bulldogs 61-39
The Blue Eagles have quite a light schedule for the week. Next up was the National University Bulldogs' turn to get a crack at the champs in the 2nd round.
Like their game on Thursday against the Maroons, it was another W for the Blue Eagles yet again.
Blue Eagles veteran Nico Salva lead his team with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block.
Bobby Ray Parks Jr. of National U was held to only 10 points and shot a measly 27.3 % from the field.
Game 2: UST upset Adamson 74-58
Everybody expected the Adamson Soaring Falcons would get an easy win over the UST Tigers that day -- or so they thought.
The Falcons easily dominated the Tigers in the first half. It was a different story in the 3rd quarter though. UST capitalized on Adamson cold shooting and took over the game. Since then, they went all the way for the win.
Jeric Teng of UST chalked up 20 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 steal.
Swingman Alex Nuyles was the only player in double digits for the Falcons. He finished with 14 points, 5 boards and dropped 4 dimes.
Sunday, September 4
Game 1: FEU get easy win over UE 78-69
With only a few games left in the elimination round, every win is important for the FEU Tamaraws. Lucky for the Tams, it was the UE Red Warriors next on their list -- hoping they don't end up like DLSU.
The Warriors are trying to bounce back from their loss to the Falcons last Thursday. It won't be an easy one when they up against a team like the Tams.
Despite shooting 50% from the field, the Warriors didn't even close to scoring an upset on a Final Four contender like the Tamaraws but wasn't to be. FEU clearly dominated the entire game.
Guard RR Garcia lead the Tamaraws with 21 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Paul Zamar of UE finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Game 2: La Salle beat UP 73-72
It could've been an easy win for the Archers. After all UP wasn't like the UE Red Warriors that literally gave them nightmares in their sleep. Well, the Maroons perhaps took note of what the Warriors game against the Archers and planned on doing the same thing to them.
The worst thing literally happened that Sunday afternoon.
UP held DLSU to 7 points in the 1st quarter. Not exactly up to Green Archers' standards. La Salle slowly clawed their way back into the game. Then in the 4th quarter, everything changed thanks to the heroics of one Almond Vosotros for the Archers.
It got real close but in the end, the Gang Green somehow escaped the game with an all important win. Oh, and Paolo Romero almost scored an buzzer beating and-1 play -- which he thought the Maroons a) won the game; b) the game will go into overtime or c) none of the above.
Green Archers big man Norbert Torres chalked up 15 points, grabbed 12 boards, dropped 2 dimes, 1 steal and blocked 1 shot.
Fil-am swingman Mike Silungan finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists for the UP Maroons.
