Winners of the first UAAP Photo Contest for Main Stream, Online and Campus media were announced as well. I joined the contest but I knew it was pretty much a long shot to win at least 3rd place. Since all my photos were taken by my trusty digital camera, I didn't stand a chance. Hopefully in June, I'll get a major, major upgrade. On the good side, my entries were exhibited at the entrance of the Araneta Coliseum. What an honor it was to have my photos showcased there. Nevermind the quality of the images but they don't matter.

It was actually good to set foot at the Big Dome once again and my first in a UAAP event. I think it was great idea to have a street dance contest with the emergence of dance crews all over the Philippines. I think it's about time crews from different schools get some love. I forgot to mention about the Drumline Exhibition from UAAP schools like La Salle, National U and Adamson U. It was well received by everybody in attendance so expect a competition like that in the works for Season 74.

Iya Villania and Gab Valenciano hosted the event. Billy Crawford was originally scheduled to be the co-host of Iya, by the way. I have to admit, even though the competition is not entirely related to sports, the energy of the crowd is just awesome. Having that kind of feeling is one of the best since I started covering the 2nd semester of UAAP 73.

While I have been agog with the atmosphere of the event, I forgot which school that kicked off the competition -- oh wait, it was UP. The University of the Philippines is perhaps one of the teams/schools that have participated in many street dance competitions. Having won the Skecher's Street Dance Contest twice a few years back, that makes them the team to beat.

The UAAP Drumline exhibition jump starts the festivities.

While there were a lot of newbies in the street dance scene like Adamson, National U, FEU and UE (they all did a good job though), I reckon University of Santo Tomas aren't new in street dance. UST has a crew (I don't quite remember what they called themselves) that joined the Skecher's Street Dance Contest and I expected that same crew to compete -- or so I thought.

UST's Salinggawi Dance Troupe came out and did their thing, Nothing against Salinggawi but if the crew's routine had more Jazz and Cheerdance moves than hip-hop -- they're not gonna win. I had the same observation with FEU's crew. They started off with hip-hop but everything else was cheerdance. UE on the other hand, had a few hip-hop in them but was overshadowed by
their tribal moves.

In between the competition, host school De La Salle University honored the Most Valuable Players and Rookies of the Year for the UAAP season 73. University of Santo Tomas were the Overall Champions for this season, by the way. Without further ado, here's the complete list of UAAP 73 MVP and ROY athletes:

Like UP, Ateneo and La Salle are veterans in the street dance scene. They both competed with UP in the college division of Skecher's Street Dance for a couple of years before UP decided not to compete there after winning their second street dance title. Ateneo did a tribute to Michael Jackson for their routine -- which is great and their moves were on point. La Salle was impressive as well. The host school didn't exactly have a theme in their run but they did incorporate a few moves from the Jabbawockeez. It was straight up hip-hop and everything they did was spot on.

Before the announcement of the Inaugural UAAP Street Dance Competition winners, La Salle officially turned over the hosting duties to Ateneo De Manila University as host of the UAAP season 74. All I can say is, DLSU's Bro. Bernard Oca was the real star of the event. If y'all watched the entire thing whether on TV or at the Big Dome, you'll know what I'm talking about. Oh and hosts Iya and Gab did a little dance showdown after the turnover ceremony.

I'ma go straight to the point, the 2nd Runner-up plum went to Ateneo De Manila University while UP got 1st Runner-up. The winner and first ever UAAP Street Dance Grand Champions -- De La Salle University! What a way to wrap up UAAP 73. De La Salle closed the season after capturing the UAAP Women's Volleyball championship and the UAAP Street Dance title. hats off to De La Salle University as host of the UAAP season 73. I had a blast!

See y'all on Season 74.
