DLSU still unbeaten, UST rips NU

Fresh from their holiday break, the De La Salle Lady Archers simply picked up where they left off -- win games. So far, they're having the best season to date as they remain on top of the standings. On Saturday, they faced the University of the East Lady Warriors to extend their streak. What better way to kickoff 2011 and wrap up the first round with a bang.

It's been pretty much a seesaw kind of season for UE. They look to upset DLSU and perhaps start a win streak of their own. Kind of a good New Year's resolution for the whole team but things didn't seem to go their way for now.

In the end, it was the same result for the Lady Archers -- a new year, another W. The game was simply lopsided and UE just couldn't handle the ladies in green. Their late surge in the 3rd set wasn't enough to avoid getting the broom. DLSU swept UE 3 sets nil.
Abigail Marano of DLSU was named Player of the Game with 14 points (10 attacks, 3 blocks and 1 serve).

DLSU -- 3 UE -- 0

25-17, 25-17, 25-21

The main event featured the UST Tigresses against the dark horse team, the National University Lady Bulldogs. UST was also looking to end the first round with a win. The Lady Bulldogs clearly wanted to make a statement on the defending champs -- literally.

NU drew first blood in the 1st set as UST drew an equalizer in the 2nd. The Lady Bulldogs won the 3rd set and the Tigresses went into panic mode. Seems as though they didn't get the memo on how dangerous Lady Bulldogs are this season. And to think most of the players of NU are rooks.

UST managed to tie up the scoreboard as they forced deciding set. NU kept biting back and wouldn't go down that easily. The Tigresses finally vanquished the Lady Bulldogs with a hard fought 3-2 win. UST's Aiza Maizo powered her team to victory and was the Player of the Game with 26 points (25 attacks, 14 digs, 1 serve).

UST -- 3 NU -- 2

25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-17

The Tigresses remain second banana in the standings despite the having an undefeated record like the Lady Archers.

On Wednesday, January 12 will be a rematch of the UAAP 72 Volleyball Finals between UST and DLSU. One of the games to look forward to as second round of the tournament looms.
